MGMT‘s songs about nostalgia and youth have such an effect on fans that they decide to film their own videos to the music.
First, Jon Salmon, a student from University of Southern Carolina created a music video for a school module and set it to MGMT’s Kids and uploaded it to YouTube. At last count, the video has been viewed more than 17 million times and MGMT then engaged them to be in their Electric Feel video.
Recently, I discovered that comedian Eric Wareheim directed his own version of MGMT’s The Youth, a sparkly and ethereal music video with kids dancing mechanical to a choreographed routine.
Though definitely amateur and with a small budget, these videos encapsulate the spirit and nostalgia of youth in a more interesting way than the official ones that MGMT puts out.
